Somewhere along the line, our need for a higher power was hijacked without our awareness. It happens to all of us. Celebrities, sports stars, influencers, politicians, even the ‘cool kid’ stole our attention in school. What they all have in common is the promise of taking us to a higher state, of lifting us toward the divine realm and allowing us to rub shoulders with the gods. This undeniable drive of ours is the narcissist’s bread and butter. They recognise and exploit our deepest desires to gain narcissistic supply.

Power is not necessarily evil. The world is built on it. It is the tip of the spear which penetrates life. Attempting to shoot down those who rise above us is futile; more will shoot up to replace them. We all need to expand, to actualise and fulfil our potential. Higher powers are blueprints for this. Having influential leaders initiate us into the world is crucial. Rather than blindly fighting power, we instead need to question who we surrender our love to and what those people do with that love. Are we blindly repeating our childhood patterns of worship? Who or what exactly are we relating to in our relationships? Are we trading our love for scraps; for the promise of salvation? Do we sense that we lack something and unwittingly seek it in someone else?
